Military Community
Roughly 1 in 25 people aged over 16 in the UK are a veteran of the UK Armed Forces while almost 200,000 people are currently serving. Whilst serving in the Armed Forces doesn’t necessarily increase suicide risk, people within the Armed Forces community face unique challenges and risks.
A death by suicide for a member of the Armed Forces can have wide-spread effects across the whole Armed Forces community.
Even though members of the Armed Forces have access to a wide range of welfare and medical support to ensure their health and wellbeing needs are met, there is a concerning emerging trend that suggests the rate of suicides within the Armed Forces is increasing and more must be done to address this.
The Armed Forces Suicide Prevention Strategy provides the strategic framework within which Defence will take further action to reduce suicide and better support those affected by it.
Help for Heroes and Zero Suicide Alliance have developed FREE online veteran suicide awareness training, the aim of this training is to provide practice in handling situations where a person may be at risk of suicide.
